The clever bit
There is no trick — the number stays itself
Every other times table has a pattern to spot. This one has a rule instead, and the rule never bends:
Any number multiplied by 1 is that number.
That is because multiplying by 1 means taking the number once. One group of 6 is just 6. One group of 12 is just 12. There is nothing to add on and nothing to share out.
It works the other way round too. 1 × 9 and 9 × 1 both give 9, because nine groups of one is the same as one group of nine. Mathematicians call the number 1 the identity for multiplication, which is a grand name for a very simple idea: it leaves everything exactly as it found it.
Once this feels automatic, you never have to think about it again — and it quietly helps with every table above.

Questions parents ask
Why is any number times 1 the same number?
Because you are taking that number one single time. Three groups of one is 3, and one group of three is also 3. Nothing is added and nothing is taken away.
Is the 1 times table worth practising?
Only briefly. It is worth a couple of minutes so that the rule feels automatic, because it turns up inside harder sums later. Most children have it after one round.
What should I learn after the 1 times table?
Go straight to the 2 times table. It is just doubling, so it builds naturally on what you already know and unlocks the 4 and 8 tables later.
