One of the easy ones

20 Times Table

Twenty is double ten, and the 10 times table is the easiest one there is — just add a zero. Put those together and 20 becomes the friendliest of all the higher tables.

Counting up in 20s: 20, 40, 60, 80, 100, 120, 140, 160, 180, 200

The clever bit

Double the 10 times table

Twenty is double ten, and the 10 times table is the easiest table there is — every answer is just the number with a zero added.

Combine the two steps:

  • 20 × 3 → 10 × 3 = 30, double it → 60
  • 20 × 6 → 10 × 6 = 60, double it → 120
  • 20 × 9 → 10 × 9 = 90, double it → 180

Why every answer ends in zero

Since 20 × n = double(10 × n), and 10 × n always ends in zero, doubling a number ending in zero always keeps that trailing zero. The tens and hundreds digits are simply double the original number.

One reassurance

This is the easiest of the higher tables, and a good one to finish on. If the 10 times table and doubling are both comfortable — and they usually are by this point — the 20 times table needs almost no new work at all.

Step one

Practise the 20 times table

Pick the answer you think is right. Nothing is timed and nothing is scored — this part is just for getting comfortable.

Practice needs JavaScript switched on. You can still read the whole table above — it works everywhere.

Step two

Take the 20 times table quiz

Ten questions, typed in. Get any wrong and you can practise just those straight afterwards.

The quiz needs JavaScript switched on. You can still read the whole table above — it works everywhere.

The ones people trip on

Most mistakes in the 20 times table land on these. Each one has a way in.

  • 20 × 7 = 140

    20 × 7 → 10 × 7 = 70, double it → 140.

  • 20 × 13 = 260

    20 × 13 → 10 × 13 = 130, double it → 260.

Where the 20 times table shows up

There are 20 questions in some classic guessing games, and a score in old counting language means 20 (as in "four score" for 80). Five 20-packs of stickers is 5 × 20 = 100 stickers.

Questions parents ask

What is the easiest way to work out the 20 times table?

Multiply by 10 first — just add a zero — then double the result. For 20 × 6: 10 × 6 = 60, double it to get 120.

Why is the 20 times table considered easy?

It combines two of the simplest operations in arithmetic: multiplying by 10 (add a zero) and doubling. There is no splitting or near-number adjustment needed at all.

What is 20 × 20?

400. Using the trick: 10 × 20 = 200, and double 200 is 400.

Is there a pattern in the 20 times table answers?

Yes — every answer ends in a zero, just like the 10 times table, because doubling a multiple of 10 always keeps that trailing zero. The tens and hundreds digits are simply double the original number.
