11 Times Table

For the first nine facts the 11 times table barely needs learning at all — you just write the digit twice. The last three break the pattern, and those are the ones worth practising.

The clever bit

Write the digit twice, then switch to ten plus one

Eleven is 10 + 1, so multiplying by 11 puts the digit in the tens column and the same digit in the units column. The result is that it appears twice:

  • 11 × 3 = 33
  • 11 × 6 = 66
  • 11 × 9 = 99

That is nine facts learned in about ten seconds, which makes this the best-value table on the site.

Where the pattern stops

The trick relies on the digit fitting in a single column, so it runs out at 11 × 9. After that:

  • 11 × 10 = 110
  • 11 × 11 = 121
  • 11 × 12 = 132

Work them out with ten-plus-one: 11 × 12 is (10 × 12) + (1 × 12) = 120 + 12 = 132. These three are the only facts in this table that need genuine practice, so that is where the time should go.

A bonus trick for bigger numbers

For 11 times any two-digit number, add the two digits and drop the total in the middle:

  • 11 × 23 → 2 + 3 = 5 → 253
  • 11 × 61 → 6 + 1 = 7 → 671

If the digits add to more than 9, the extra carries into the tens — which is exactly why 11 × 12 comes out as 132 rather than 132 spelled out naively.

Players in a football team, and the number of a spinal vertebra nobody ever remembers. Three football teams have 3 × 11 = 33 players.

Why does 11 times a single digit just repeat that digit?

Because 11 is 10 + 1. Multiplying by 10 puts the digit in the tens column, and multiplying by 1 puts it in the units column, so the same digit appears twice. 11 × 4 is 40 + 4 = 44.

Where does the repeating pattern in the 11 times table stop?

At 11 × 9 = 99. After that the units digit would need to carry, so 11 × 10 = 110, 11 × 11 = 121 and 11 × 12 = 132. These three are the only ones that need real practice.

What is the trick for 11 times a two-digit number?

Add the two digits and drop the total in the middle. For 11 × 23: 2 + 3 = 5, so the answer is 253. If the digits total more than 9 you carry the extra, which is why 11 × 12 is 132 rather than 1(3)2.

Is the 11 times table worth practising?
